Mumbai, Monday, December 18, 2017: Mahyco Monsanto Biotech (India) Pvt. Ltd (MMB) in partnership with Action for Food Production (AFPRO) has successfully completed two years of their joint CSR initiative "Swachh and Unnat Bharat".

Poor access to sanitation facilities and clean drinking water continue to remain a critical challenge in rural communities across India. Unhygienic practices pose a grave danger to the security and dignity of community members; it also leads to water contamination and other health-related problems like the spread of water borne diseases.

The "Swachh and Unnat Bharat" initiative forms a key part of MMB’s flagship CSR programme DISHA. The effort spans the states of Maharashtra, Telangana, AP and Karnataka, follows a robust community participatory approach.

In Maharashtra’s Vidarbha region, this programme has benefitted over 40,000 community members in 5,000 households across 25 villages.

Dhanalakshmi Ramachandra, Lead – CSR & Sustainability, Monsanto India said, "Helping drive the ‘Swachh and Unnat Bharat’ initiative in hinterlands through the construction of one’s own individual toilet will have a positive hygiene impact on the lives of communities, as well as positive social connotations like better health among children, women safety, and better living conditions. Monsanto works very closely with the communities it operates in. It is our endeavour to bring about a tangible change in the lives of India’s rural communities."

Through this initiative, MMB hopes to inculcate better sanitation & hygiene practices thereby reducing incidences of health-related problems due to contaminated water & poor hygiene practices. Establishing household sanitation units across rural geographies is a small step in our commitment towards the communities that we work so closely with.

The household sanitary units are built by MMB in partnership with the direct beneficiaries of the program. Under this collaborative effort the community members provide for the labour, while MMB provides all the raw materials required for installing the sanitation unit. This ensures that the community progressively works towards the success of this initiative. It also makes the community more sensitive and responsible towards each other, which constitutes an important component of the program.

To enable provide clean drinking water to districts across Vidarbha, MMB has created water storage structures, water pipelines, borewells and installed RO units in the community. This has enabled easy access to water and reducing drudgery for women in these areas.

As part of its future efforts, MMB along with AFPRO will continue to provide safe drinking water solutions, sensitize and spread awareness on healthy hygiene practices and skill enhancement trainings for women.

As a responsible corporate, MMB has always remained committed to making a difference to the lives of farmers and rural communities – people that it touches through its products, efforts in the field, or through its philanthropic activities.
