Monsanto India showcases high yielding varieties of Seminis ® Hybrid vegetables at Pragati Divas 2016 in Varanasi

Over 800 farmers, dealers & distributors experience latest technological know-how

Varanasi, 9th May 2017: Monsanto India, a globally leading sustainable agriculture company, today organised 'Pragati Divas 2016’ to demonstrate and showcase its Seminis ® hybrid vegetable portfolio. The event organized at Monsanto’s state-of-the-art TOM Centre in Varanasi, was well attended by Smt. Alka Rai, MLA Muhemdabad Ghazipur, Dr. Muthra Rai, Ex. Director Indian Institute of Vegetable Research, Varanasi, Dr. Mayank Rai, Head KVK - Noida, Dr. S.S. Singh, Head KVK Dehradun, Dr. R R Singh, Head KVK – Faizabad and Dr.Tribhuwan Singh, Ex - HOD BHU, Dept. of Agricultural Sciences. In addition, the event also witnessed participation from more than 850 farmers, dealers and distributors from adjoining villages.

Visitors at the Pragati Divas witnessed various varieties of vegetable hybrids covering tomato, chilli, polebeans, cucumber, cauliflower, cabbage, okra, and watermelon. Farmers were also provided details on the salient features of the upcoming hybrids in maize and vegetables. They were also enlightened on the breeding science behind development of these hybrids; while being walked through kiosks displaying the advantages of technology in agriculture.

At the event, visitors witnessed vegetables grown from Monsanto’s Seminis® hybrid vegetable seeds and experienced the successes from latest crop management practices.Farmers were also provided details of traditional plant breeding techniques, modern science behind Seminis ® vegetable seeds and the correct Insect-Pest Management. Participating farmers were also taken on a tour of the breeding station which is spread across 7 acres.

Sharing his experience, Divendra Singh, farmer from Kundesher village in Ghazipur, said, “I am very happy with excellent output that I have received using Abhilash® tomato hybrids in my field. The hybrid has high yields and uniformity over multiple pickings. Moreover, it has shown high resistance and consistence in adverse climate. Abhilash® has helped me fetch excellent prices for my produce.”

Seminis® hybrid vegetable seeds offer farmers higher yield potential, quick maturity and uniformity in size, shape and colour as compared to using other seed varieties.

Monsanto’s Vegetable breeding station at Varanasi was established in the year 2012 and is spread over seven acres area of land focusing on testing of new and existing hybrids. This facility focuses on developing tomato, sweet pepper, hot pepper and cauliflower hybrids especially suited for the various agro-climatic conditions of the region.
