Patna, October 27, 2017: Ahead of the upcoming Rabi season, under its farmer engagement initiative "Margdarshak", Monsanto India - a sustainable agriculture company – has identified over 4000 progressive farmers from key corn growing districts in Bihar.

Monsanto is currently mentoring them on effective agronomic practices and right hybrid selection that can provide them with the best yields. The major corn growing districts in Bihar are Muzaffarpur, Motihari, Dedhiya, Samastipur, Darbhanga, Hajipur, Chhapra, Begusarai, Khagaria, Bhagalpur, Madhepur, Saharsa, Sukol, Purnia, Katihar, Araria, and Kishanganj.

"Margdarshak" is a mentoring program from Monsanto where just before the start of the season, agronomists mentor select progressive farmers from each district in the state. As they progress, these farmers become "Margdarshaks" who enable their farmer friends to practice best agronomic practices in their villages.

Rajiv Kumar Bharti, Sarpanch of Bhisdira village, Katihar district is currently part of the "Margdarshak" programme. He says, "The Margdarshak programme helps address various issues we face in the field. As leaders / Margdarshaks, we will connect with our counterparts and will train them on – land selection, field preparation, seed rate, seed treatment, sowing method, manures, fertilization, nutrient supply, irrigation, weed control, disease and insect management, harvesting and yield."

Informing about this initiative, Ramanugrah Pandey, Regional Sales Manager, Monsanto said, "Maize is a crucial crop for Bihar, with around half a million farmers engaged in maize farming. Keeping this in mind, under our farmers’ awareness initiative "Margdarshak" we engage with farmers at village level meetings and provide them with agronomic advisories which will enable them and their colleagues farm better."

Bihar’s maize season starts in mid-August and continues till February - March. Pre-season is a valuable time for farmers to start preparing their land and hence before they get into sowing, trainings under the "Margdarshak" programme will help them counter varied challenges in the field to derive the best results.
