Monsanto India to set up 5 drinking water plants in Telangana

Huzurabad, Karimnagar, May 21, 2016: Monsanto India has partnered with Jaldhaara Foundation (JF) and WaterHealth India (WHN) to launch the first of its five “WaterHealth Center” (WHCs) at Huzurabad town of Karimnagar district.

The “WaterHealth Center” was inaugurated by Shri Etela Rajender, Finance Minister, Government of Telangana and Shri B Vinod Kumar, Member of Parliament, Karimnagar. This center will provide access to safe and quality drinking water for over 50,000 people in Karimnagar, of which over 35,000 people will be served in the immediate vicinity of the plant.

Monsanto’s CSR commitment spans two flagship programs, with a vision to helping improve lives by partnering with communities to deliver lasting solutions. DISHA covers our efforts in the Health, Nutrition and Education areas focused on women and children in rural communities.

Monsanto’s other CSR focus areas include creating a sustainable agricultural ecosystem for small and marginal farmers under its Project SHARE program. Through this program, the focus is on increasing agricultural yields sustainably, through input- output capacity building of the farmers, imparting best package of practices and facilitating market linkages for improving household incomes for small and marginal farmers across Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh.

Speaking at the launch of its first RO plant in Huzurabad town, Telangana, Piyush Nagar, India Supply Chain Lead, Monsanto India, said, “As a company that works extensively in rural India, we have always endeavoured and remained committed to serving communities both directly and indirectly. Through our partnership with Jaldhaara Foundation (JF) we are working towards providing safe drinking water to the residents of Huzurabad and its surrounding areas. We are confident that through this effort, local residents will have a healthier life by reducing incidences of water borne diseases.”

Jaldhaara Foundation’s long term objective is to implement integrated WASH programs for underserved communities in India and other developing countries. The Foundation partners with reputed commercial and development organizations to pursue such programs worldwide.

Speaking on the occasion, Arish Syed, Chief Executive Officer, Jaldhaara Foundation said, “The current  partnership with Monsanto India Limited is a major step towards achieving Jaldhaara’s mission of implementing sustainable Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) solutions in over two thousand (2,000) communities by 2020.

The project builds on WaterHealth India’s (technical partner for Jaldhaara Foundation) successful track record of managing over 500 community water systems called WaterHealth Centers (WHC) in India and Africa since 2006. The WaterHealth Center is the next generation water “micro-utility”, with its six (6) stages purification process, delivering water quality that conforms to IS10500 and WHO standards.

The RO plants being set up in Telangana are state of the art water purifiers that will also recycle the reject water (during the filtration process). The locations selected for setting up the plants have also been carefully chosen such that they serve the most underserved communities of Telangana.

About Monsanto India

Monsanto is a sustainable agriculture company. We deliver agricultural products that support farmers all around the world. We are focused on empowering farmers—large and small—to produce more from their land while conserving more of our world's natural resources such as water and energy. We do this with our leading seed brands in crops like corn, cotton and fruits and vegetables. We also produce leading in-the-seed trait technologies for farmers, which are aimed at protecting their yield, supporting their on-farm efficiency and reducing their on-farm costs.

We strive to make our products available to farmers throughout the world by broadly licensing our seed and trait technologies to other companies. In addition to our seeds and traits business, we also manufacture Roundup® and other herbicides used by farmers, consumers and lawn-and-garden professionals.

Monsanto could not exist without farmers. They are our customers--the lifeblood of our company. More important, they are the support system of the world's economy, working day in and day out to feed, clothe and provide energy for our world.
