Hybrid seeds continue to benefit Maharashtra’s maize farmers

Farmers yield bountiful yields from state-of-the-art DEKALB® hybrids

Pune, December 26, 2017: This Kharif season, Maharashtra’s maize farmers remain upbeat regarding their harvest. This is despite the lower commodity prices during the peak of harvest season.

Farmers in the state continue to prefer superior yield high quality DEKALB® maize seeds, a trend that has been observed once the last few years where farmers have been widely using DEKALB® hybrid seeds for its superior traits such as reduced water requirements, better tolerance to diseases, attractive grain colour, increased yields and higher produce prices.

DEKALB® hybrids have always been consistent in delivering excellent harvest in Maharashtra. The hybrids continue to perform well even in extreme weather conditions, as is evident from the fact that some districts in the state witnessed excess rainfall. Farmers, who have opted for hybrids over other seed varieties, have not only secured sufficient yields but are also expecting significant returns.

For past several years, Yogesh Ranganth Khule a farmer from Vadangali village, Sinnar Taluka Nasik district has been sowing hybrid maize seeds in his field. He said, "Taking a cue from previous seasons, we had sown maize in our fields. Farmers in our district who opted for DEKALB® hybrid maize have not only received higher yield than most of the other hybrids available in the market, but also better prices."

Hybrid maize seeds like DEKALB® are popular amongst farmers in districts like Aurangabad, Sangli, Jalgaon, Nashik, Pune, Jalna, and Buldhana. They opt for this cash crop over others as it has year-round demand in markets for its use as food and feed.

Atul Kadam, Regional Sales Manager, Monsanto said, "Farming is crucial for Maharashtra, as the state contributes significant share to India’s total food production. We believe that even though the average productivity of maize in Maharashtra this year is low, our high yielding DEKALB® maize seeds have given impressive returns. We consistently working towards developing Monsanto’s DEKALB® range of maize hybrids to suit specific agronomic conditions."

In India, key maize growing states are Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Rajasthan, Haryana, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka which together account for majority of India’s maize output. While, the outlook for the near and mid-term looks promising, over the next decade, India’s domestic demand for maize is expected to grow by 36 per cent and outstrip supply.

DEKALB® maize hybrid seeds have enabled farmers to get more from every acre of farmland by perfectly adjusting to state’s agro-climatic conditions. As has been the practice each year, Monsanto’s on-field farm experts engages with maize farmers and had informed them about best farm-management practices which had enabled them to make informed decisions about crops and techniques. These practices consist of knowledge about management of weeds, pests and environmental stresses.
