Monsanto India launches high yielding hybrid DEKALB 9135 exclusively for Bihar Rabi season

Patna, 14 November: Continuing the success of its DEKALB range of hybrid maize seeds which have been widely accepted and adopted by farmers, Monsanto India has launched yet another high yielding hybrid DEKLAB 9135 in Bihar. The variety has been exclusively designed to suit the State’s Rabi crop conditions. Dekalb 9135 takes a shorter time to mature compared with the other hybrids, thereby compensating for a shorter sowing cycle that farmers get for Rabi crops. The hybrid has long and robust cobs giving higher yield in the agronomic conditions in Bihar Rabi.

In order to make the benefits of DEKALB 9135 available to the maximum number of farmers in a wider geographical spread, Monsanto India has launched the seed simultaneously in five districts of Khagaria, Katihar, Purnia, Araria and Samastipur. Over 30,000 farmers in all the regions came to witness and understand the advantages of this hybrid at the launch events.

Speaking on the launch of DEKALB 9135, Shri Aanand Shrikar, Business Head (East), Monsanto, said the core of our strategy is our ability to develop and deliver valuable products and solutions for farmers to sustainably increase yields, combat agronomic challenges, increase profitability and deliver better products to customers. A maize farmer faces numerous challenges ranging from weeds, insects, diseases, unpredictable weather and water availability. Each hybrid is developed in India and tested extensively through our partnerships with several State Agriculture Universities and other leading agricultural institutions. Our focus is to make a sustainable difference to the lives of Indian maize farmers by developing better seeds, improving access and knowledge sharing on best practices. DEKALB 9135 is a significant step in this direction and will give a boost to the yields and output of Rabi maize in Bihar.”

Maize is the third largest cereal crop in India after rice and wheat with an area of 8.5 million hectare. Bihar is one of the major maize growing states contributing nearly 8.9% of the total maize production in the country with nearly seven lakh acres being cultivated under maize per year. The current productivity of maize in India is 2.5 tons per hectare which is far below the global average of five tons per hectare. The low productivity in maize is attributed to partial hybridization adopted in Kharif season, which remains the dominant season for maize cultivation. As against this, Rabi season maize yields are better compared to Kharif owing to a higher degree of hybridization especially in the states like Bihar.

The introduction of DEKALB 9135 is likely to add to the Rabi produce of Maize, thereby giving an upward push to the overall production of the crop in the State. “With this advanced variety hitting the markets this season, we expect to see more and more farmers adopting Rabi maize and thus, a considerable increase in the overall production of maize in Bihar. We will keep our efforts going in this direction by providing the farmers with tips on best agronomic practices through our Farm AgVisory Services,” Ajit Kumar, Business Lead Maize, Monsanto said.
