UP farmers choose maize hybrids over other crops this Spring season

State-of-the-art hybrids expected to deliver increased yields

Lucknow, January 29, 2018: This Spring season, farmers in the state of Uttar Pradesh are continuing to show preference towards maize hybrids over other crops like wheat, menthe, sugarcane and vegetables. The Spring season in UP lasts between January to end-March.

Farmers opting for Monsanto’s DEKALB® hybrids last season have seen better yields during the Spring as well as the Kharif seasons last time around. In the last few years, hybrid seeds have been widely accepted by farmers of the state due to features like growth, less water requirements, tolerance to diseases, attractive colour and higher yields.

During the last Spring season, hybrid seeds yielded very good results despite the vagaries of weather and low commodity prices. At the start of Kharif season in October, maize farmers, who had opted for DEKALB® hybrid seeds over other hybrid seeds have not only secured excellent yields but have also secured good returns.

For past several years, Anil Kumar Singh, farmer from Bansa village, Hardoi district of Uttar Pradesh has been sowing hybrid maize seeds in his field. He says, "Taking a cue from previous seasons, we had sown maize in our fields. Farmers in our district who opted for DEKALB® hybrid maize have not only received higher yield than most of the other hybrids available in the market, but also better prices."

Hybrid maize seeds are popular amongst farmers in districts like Aligarh, Bulandshahr, Etah, Kasganj, Nainpur, Firozabad, Aliganj, Shikohabad, Farrukhabad, Kannauj, Unnao, Kanpur Dehat, Moradabad, Sambhal, Badaun, Hardoi, Bahraich, Gonda and Ballia. In the state, maize is sowed twice in a year i.e in Kharif and Spring seasons. Due to its availability, nutritional value and lower prices, it is the preferred feed for the poultry industry and accounts for almost 50 percent of all consumption.

Vinay Singh, Regional Business Manager, Monsanto says, "We believe that even though the average productivity of maize in Uttar Pradesh last season was low, our high yielding DEKALB® maize seeds have given impressive returns. We are consistently working towards developing Monsanto’s DEKALB® range of maize hybrids to suit specific agronomic conditions."

In the state, range of DEKALB® maize hybrid seeds have enabled farmers to get more from every acre of farmland. DEKALB® Kharif seeds perfectly adjust to state’s agro-climatic conditions. Like every year, this year too, during current spring pre-season, Monsanto’s on-field farm experts are engaging with maize farmers and are informing them about best farm-management practices which will enable them to make informed decisions about crops and techniques. These practices consist of knowledge about management of weeds, pests and environmental stresses.
